Extended Duties Dental Nursing Certificate

Dr Begonia Marti will provide you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to competently apply topical fluoride varnish to adult and child patients following a prescription of a dentist. You will learn the importance of safe and effective oral health education and helpful ways to introduce this to patients. You will also brush up your knowledge of the preventive role of topical fluoride in Oral Health. Begonia understands the difficulty that nurses can have with saliva control and patient management, her hands on training session will allow you to learn tips and tricks to give you confidence when carrying out this extended nurse duty within your role.   

Included in this course will be the compulsory topics of

•Anatomy and Physiology• Professionalism in Practice• Oral Health Promotion•  Cross Infection Control• Health and Safety• Dental Caries• Fluoride• Portfolio Building

After completion of the course, you will be required with the guidance of your supervising dentist to build a portfolio of 8 patients to show your competence. Once verified, you will be awarded your certificate of competency in topical fluoride application.

Fluoride Application Course for Dental Nurses

The minimum age requirement for this course is 18 years. 

Students must have:

  • GDC registration 
  • Professional indemnity certificate. 
  • Students must have access to assist with patients who require fluoride application. 
  • They must have written confirmation from a supervising dentist that they take responsibility for overseeing the students training in the workplace 
  • Written confirmation that they are able to attend the training course as required so that they receive instruction in the theoretical knowledge necessary to assist with Fluoride application  techniques competently.
  • be self-motivated
  • Excellent level of English. You must be able to read, write and understand English fluently. Students may be asked to sit an entry test. The results of this will determine your progression through the course

Attendance at the workshop day is essential.


You will need a computer with internet access to study this course as the study material and activities are accessible via a web browser.
